I really can't believe it's already June. My unpreparedness for summer can't be put in to words. The accompanying heat looms heavy over the training program I loosely put together in preparation for early fall races. Now's the time to start putting in the work to have successful (and fast) distance runs in October when the half-marathon season kicks off.

The New Orleans sauna won't prevent my participation in warm races throughout this month. From completing the Louisiana Bridge Run Series for a third time, to running the New Orleans Trail Run Series, traditional races on non-traditional courses make up the majority of my schedule. There's even a multi-discipline event that quite literally elevates bike riding to new heights. No matter where your racing takes you this month, consider one of these great events as a guaranteed fun addition to your calendar.

Running a little late with the preview of races for the month of may. We already have one weekend of great events behind us, and I took full advantage. Great weather made it near impossible for me to stay inside and sit behind a computer. As I result, I spent two days on the Jazz Festival grounds, working the New Orleans Track Club's first race of the month, and spending a late night with the animals at Zoo-To-Do.
Since January, I've been running bi-weekly with the New Orleans Track Club's 10K training program, helping coach and encourage participants who are well on their way to completing their first 10K at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic. Look for us in bright yellow singlets as you run from the Superdome to City Park, and congratulate the team on all the hard work they've put in the past several months!

One of the great rewards that has come from being on the coaching team of the training program is hearing participants talk about other upcoming races for which they have signed up. Their goal race may be tomorrow's Classic, but they are excited about keeping up their training well past April 4th. Here's a list of April races where you may run in to one of the training group's participants!
Be sure to pick up your race number and shirt today from the expo at the Hyatt Regency, where registration is also available.
With the coming three day weekend, I'm sure you're already on the downhill slide in to holiday mode. However, you've got a little prep to do before the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic 10K on Saturday morning.

The CCC10K Health and Fitness Expo opens at 10am today and tomorrow in the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, and stays open until 8:00 p.m. both nights. This is the ONLY place you can register for the race, pick up your number and participant t-shirt, and scope out vendors hawking their running related wares. All expo details are available HERE.

As you mentally prepare to check out from work, now's the time to step away from YouTube and the cute kitty videos you've been watching all morning. This video that the Crescent City Classic released gives you the lowdown on everything you need to know for the best possible race-day experience!

New Orleans has suffered unbearable temperatures since Mardi Gras, with multiple days having highs that don't climb out of the 40's. I'm not complaining, as I much prefer the cold over the summer heat; however, it's been hard for me to get motivated in the new year. After finishing three and a half marathons in January, getting back in to a groove post-recovery has been near impossible. Fortunately, racing in the Crescent City quickly picks up speed as we hop in to spring.

The goal race for many local runners is the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic 10K, this year on April 4th. If you're vying for one of the coveted seeded bib numbers, remember you only have a few local options left to finish a 10K in under 45 minutes. That seeded slot gets you in front of the pack along side some of the fastest 10K runners in the world. Those qualifying opportunities are listed below, among other great NOLA area events that welcome walkers and runners alike!

Tulane Athletics 5K (Saturday, March 7th @ 8:00am) - Registration includes a tasc Performance tshirt, and will be available prior to the start of the race on the Gameday Plaza at Yulman Stadium. February is typically a month where NOLA runners get to decompress from the hectic racing schedule of January. After multiple weekends in a row of distance events, it's easy to get wrapped up in Mardi Gras festivities, abandoning a training schedule and much needed discipline. While that recovery period is necessary, it's important to keep focus on coming spring 10K's and the goals you want to achieve at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic 10K (April 04th).

As I sit here writing this preview of February races, I'll admit that there's a piece of my favorite King Cake within reach (Haydel's tradition unfilled, in case you were wondering). It'll be tough taking these next few weekends in moderation, but I've committed to getting back under 50 minutes for a 10K. Having that goal to work toward will give me motivation to tackle some of these shorter distances in between parading and repenting.

Proceeds benefit Youth Run NOLA and Make Music NOLA, two non-profits in the city that do amazing work.

Running USA Conference (Sunday, February 08th - Tuesday, February 10th) - If you're downtown in mid-February, expect to see lots of moisture wicking material mixed with the typical CBD business attire. Running USA conveniently brings their annual convention to the Crescent City mid-Mardi Gras.

It's been quite a few weeks since there's been a new post on NOLArunner. Saying that the holidays and first month of 2015 have been busy is an understatement, but not a good enough excuse. Here's my chance to salvage as much of the month of January as possible with this last weekend of major racing just around the corner.

Before we get to the final weekend of January and the marathon of running that'll be happening in NOLA this Sunday, I'll quickly go through the first several weekends of the month to be used as reference next year. While I haven't been documenting the area's happenings very well as of late, I've been out at many events and recap blogs will be trickling in for most of these soon.

108th Annual Jackson Day Race 9K (Sunday, January 04th @ 8:30 a.m.) - The oldest race in the south follows the historic path that Lafitte's pirates took to come to the aid of Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. This year's event celebrated the bicentennial of that victory with a great post-race block party in the French Quarter.

Lake Town Ten 10 Mile & 5K (Saturday, January 10th @ 8:00 a.m.) - The final race in the "Run Around the Lake Series" is an out and back path on the Kenner shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Post race food included a pancake breakfast provided by the local rotary club.

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (January 8th - 11th @ 5:30 a.m.) - The New Orleans running community is always strongly represented at this weekend of racing in Orlando. Multiple locals compete in at least one of the distances available, with many taking on the Goofy Challenge (Half & Full Marathon). Runners looking for additional miles can tack on a 5K and 10K before the distance races to complete the Dopey Challenge.

The Louisiana Marathon, Half, Quarter, & 5K (January 16th - 18th @ 7:00 a.m.) - Celebrating its fourth year, the Louisiana Marathon weekend has expanded to now include a Quarter Marathon (6.55 miles) distance with the 5K and kids' races on Saturday. The Half and Louisiana Marathon on Sunday have grown, with the 26.2 mile distance coming close to capacity near race day.

Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon, Half, 10K, & Relay (Sunday, January 25th @ 7:00 a.m.) - The main event in New Orleans winter running is the long distance races of the Rock 'n' Roll marathon series. This Sunday's events include a marathon that features a new course, a brand new 10K distance, and an enhanced post-race party. Registration is still open at the expo on Friday and Saturday at the New Orleans Convention Center.Fred | NOLArunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13275193370710119959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730699651934242791.post-15775535750571323922014-12-05T06:00:00.000-08:002014-12-08T09:09:03.894-08:00107th Annual NOAC Turkey Day Race: The 2014 Recap

This was the first year in almost a decade that I didn't get to run the annual NOAC Turkey Day Race; however, that comes with the territory when you're on the board of the New Orleans Track Club. Nevertheless, nothing made me happier on Thanksgiving morning than getting to watch 3,000 runners start their holiday with the same tradition I've kept for so long.

Seeing as how I didn't get to run, I can't really write a recap of the race. Fortunately, there were three news stations on-site capturing race-day footage, plus a videographer from the New Orleans Track Club. Each outlet that covered the event told the Turkey Day Race story perfectly, so their segments below are the best way for you to relive the occasion.

First, the NOTC's video covers everything from the start to finish, plus well in to the after party. See if you can spot yourself or your friends in this excellent recap:

WWL-TV did several live segments on their morning show from the start of the race, and then recapped the exciting finish in their subsequent newscasts. See that video HERE.

WDSU News Channel 6 also was on-site, and did a great piece that featured runners along side patients afflicted with Spina Bifida, the organization that the race benefits. See Kelsey Davis' report below:

I almost let the opening week of December pass me by without getting a month preview posted. But never fear, your social planner is here. If you're looking for a longer distance race to get some final supported long runs taken care of before your January marathon, there's plenty to choose from.

My busiest months at work happen to coincide with the peak of racing season; however, that hasn't stopped me from taking part in events. Now, I just don't have time to recap on here everything that's going on. That being said, I'll be running the vast majority of these races, and look forward to letting you know how they turn out. It may be July before that happens, but your patience will be rewarded. I promise.
Baton Rouge Beach Marathon & Half (Saturday, December 06th @ 7:00 a.m.) - Finally in 2014, the running chicken is turning legal. I've run the double loop course through LSU's campus and around the lakes several times, as my first marathon and 3 times since. The big draw for me is the small, quaint feeling of the race that still pays close attention to detail. Also, great post race food always lures me in. Tomorrow morning marks the 107th Annual NOAC Turkey Day Race and its running through New Orleans City Park. Today I came across a website (www.TurkeyDayRace.com) outlining the very rich history of the race. With permission from race organizers, I have borrowed that content to share below.

It's still not too late for you to be part of this history, with race morning registration available starting at 7:00 a.m. outside Tad Gormley Stadium (5400 Stadium Dr, New Orleans, LA 70124). Race time for the 5-mile event is 8:30 a.m., followed by the half-mile kids' race. Get full race details HERE.

Thanksgiving Morning: since 1907!

The New Orleans Athletic Club’s Turkey Day Race is one of the oldest and continuously held non-marathon races in the United States. In 1986, the race became a charitable event assisting the needs of our local community and has been instrumental in helping the Spina Bifida Association of Greater New Orleans.

The race was established in 1907 by Francis Thomas "Tad" Gormley, the Athletic Director of the Young Men's Gymnastic Club (YMGC), which was renamed the New Orleans Athletic Club (NOAC) in 1929. Mr. Gormley subsequently coached track at Louisiana State University and served on the athletic staff of Loyola University. In 1932, Mr. Gormley served as assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic Track Team and in 1938 he was hired as the Athletic Director at City Park.

The Turkey Day Race is steeped in running history and tradition. In 1907, Tad Gormley came to New Orleans from Boston and started the Turkey Day Race and the Jackson Day Race. The first runner across the finish line in 1907 was Leo Fincke of the YMCA with a time of 31:20, and Jimmy Grant representing the YMGC was the Time Prize Winner at 28:05. Historically, until the 1980’s, the runners were “handicapped” based on their time. Often the first runner to cross the finish line was not the runner with the best time. Races were designed so most of the runners finished about the same time, so slower runners were given a head start or handicap. From 1907 through 1966 the 5-mile race was held on North Rampart and Canal Streets, except when it was suspended in 1918 because of World War I and was revived by the Athletic Director in 1928, Irwin Poche. With the exception the World War II period of 1943-45, the race has been held every Thanksgiving morning.

With the dedication of City Park Stadium in 1937, track and field events grew over the decades. The NOAC Punch magazine describes the 1947 race as “the opening event for the 1947-48 Cross Country Season” with participants from local high schools including Jesuit and Holy Cross; area universities including L.S.U. and Tulane; and military teams from as far away as the Pensacola Naval Air Station. The Punch described the 1957 race on November 28th “as the biggest cross-country race of the Southern AAU district.” A 1963 Punch story identified the first attempt to expand the race beyond the serious 150 AAU runners by creating a half-mile event for “business executives.” During the 1960’s the race increased in its popularity with runners from the southern U.S. competing in what had developed to be a major event with team awards for universities and high schools.

After the death of Tad Gormley in 1965, the stadium in City Park was renamed in his honor. In 1967 a 5-mile racecourse was established in and around City Park with the finish line in Tad Gormley Stadium, the location of the 1992 Olympic Track and Field Trials. In 1967 the winner of the first race in Tad Gormley Stadium was Jonathan Boydston with a time of 24:44 from the University of Chicago Track Club.

Runners from across the country traveled to New Orleans each Thanksgiving to compete in the Turkey Day Race but history was made in 1969 when the first woman competed in the race. Barbara Gorrondona in 1969 was the first female to compete against 102 men and made race history. That same year the time prize went to the NOAC’s Larry Fuselier with a winning time of 29:10.

In 1970, inspired by Barbara Gorrondona, four women entered the race and competed against 108 male runners. Another historic event occurred when the first to cross the finish line was a 16 year-old female, Alicia Sabi an Ursuline Academy sophomore who with a 12-minute handicap ran the race in 31:52. Phil Camp from the Pensacola Naval Station was the time prize winner at 24:14.

As the world changed so did the race. In the late 1970’s running became a popular form of exercise and a social event. The size of the Turkey Day Race grew from 150 to 1,000 participants by the mid 1980’s. With that growth, the focus of the race changed to include the elite runners and the now large general running community. Awards now covered age groups and special events, including the first wheelchair division in 1986 introduced by the Spina Bifida Association of Greater New Orleans.

By 1986 the race became a large event that required year long planning and development, which required more resources. Based on the NOAC historic support of charities since 1872 and desire to develop the historic race, the NOAC created another historic event by making the Turkey Day Race a “charitable event”, to help children and their families in need with all profits donated to the charities actively involved in supporting and developing this Thanksgiving tradition since 1907.

The Turkey Day Race has established a rich tradition and heritage among runners throughout the South. Tradition best describes the Turkey Day Race. In the February 1986 issue of RUNNER'S WORLD, an article entitled "You Should Be Committed,” covered the 78th Annual Turkey Day Race in a feature on a local runner, Mr. Albert Briede. In 2008, Mr. Briede participated in his 50th consecutive Turkey Day Race.Fred | NOLArunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13275193370710119959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730699651934242791.post-69827468747540897872014-11-13T06:00:00.000-08:002014-11-13T10:06:01.643-08:00Woman's Half Marathon & 10K Preview

Sunday morning, the lakes in Baton Rouge will turn pink when the Woman's Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K take to the streets. In it's third year, this growing race benefits Woman's Hospital and their efforts to improve the health of women and infants in our community. And while this event is all about the ladies, men are more than welcome to run and support the cause!

The festivities start on Friday, November 14th for the RunPink “Happier Hour” & Wellness Boutique from 3:00 -7:00 p.m. at the Lyceum Ballroom (124 Third Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70801). Vendors will be on hand with race merchandise, upcoming races will offer great deals, and more.
The Wellness Boutique continues on Saturday, November 15th from 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. at the Lyceum Ballroom.

At the expo, participants will be able to pick up their race number, female cut or unisex shirts, and other premium goodies that come with your registration. One of those goodies is a really nice bag embroidered with the race logo. This year, runners have the option to choose the color palate they want to claim, while supplies last. Arrive early to have the best selection! Plus, those of you who waited 'til the last minute to register will have the opportunity to do so at the expo. The 13.1 mile course begins in downtown Baton Rouge and heads south for the first 2 1/2 miles until it reaches Skip Bertman Dr where it turns left. Participants in the half marathon will continue across Nicholson Dr onto Stadium Dr. while participants who are in the 10K will run north on Nicholson Dr. The half marathon will then turn left onto W. Lakeshore Dr. and enjoy the view of University Lake until approaching Dalrymple and turn north for a tour of the neighborhood. Once the runners return downtown, it will be a quick loop around the State Capitol and Arsenal Park before a grand finish right back where they started on S. River Road. It's a beautiful, flat course that highlights great areas of the 225.
An email that was just sent by race organizers affirms our fears, and it appears that weather will be questionable on Sunday morning. With the possibility of rain comes the decision to move the post-race party indoors to the Lyceum Ballroom. Inside, runners will be entertained by DJ Russell and will be warmed with soup from Street Breads, chips & salsa from Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar, Jimmy John's Sandwiches, beer & root beer from Abita and lots of other great snacks. Organizers are providing Bag Check for anyone who wants to check warm dry clothes after the race.
Whether you're a seasoned runner or participating in your first race, odds are good you have a goal in mind for an upcoming event. With the Big Easy Running Festival in less than two weeks, you've put in the work to reach those goals. However, you don't have to go it alone come race-day.
The New Orleans Track Club has partnered with The Smoothie King Big Easy Running Festival to present the NOTC Pace Team at their half marathon event on November 23rd! Here's your chance to meet the experienced runners that will be leading you to your desired finish time and surpass your own expectations:
As an NOTC board member, I’m excited to represent our club and to help one of our partners put on what looks to be a great event. This will be my first time running an event as an official pacer, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I’ve run one full marathon and six half-marathons, recently setting a new PR (1:21.11) at this year’s Jazz Half. I’m most excited about running across the bridge, as this will be my first time crossing it on foot (Cooper River, Golden Gate, Huey P? Check, check, check. Crescent City Connection? Not yet!).
Hi! My name is Lauren and I will be serving as the pacer for the 8:00-mile pace group. I have been a runner for 13 years, competing in both high school and college cross country and track. I ran my first half-marathon one week after graduating college in 2009 and have run a total of 11 half-marathons (half PR of 1:35). I ran my 1st full marathon in February 2013 in a time of 3:48. I am super excited to pace participants in the Big Easy Running Festival and to relive my days of running endless hills in upstate NY by getting the opportunity to run over the Crescent City Connection!

Casey U. - 9:00 min / mile
My name is Casey, and I’ll be leading the 9-minute pace team. I’ve been running for 10 years, and have completed 15 halfs, 15 fulls, and 30 ultras. My half marathon PR is 1:37. I’m originally from Lexington, Kentucky, but moved to New Orleans about 2 years ago, and one of my favorite places to run is around City Park – so this is definitely the part of the course I am most excited about! On race day, the 9-minute pace team will be looking to break the 2 hour mark, so if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. I look forward to helping you enjoy your race as much as possible!
My running resume includes 22 half marathons and 15 full marathons, with a half PR at 1:35, and full of 3:20. I paced during the Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon in 2013, and looking forward to doing it again at the Big Easy Half Marathon in a couple weeks! I am an avid trail runner in Lousiana, but the highlight of the Big Easy course will have to be the Crescent City Connection bridge right at the start of the race.
I'm excited to finally be able to run as pacer for an event at the Big Easy Half Marathon! Having finished 35 full marathons (PR 03:54) and numerous halves, I'm looking to slow my pace to enjoy the great views of NOLA from the Crescent City Connection. However, as a native New Orleanian and avid sports fan, I'm anticipating my pacing group's triumphant finish at the Smoothie King Center and Mercedes Benz Superdome. Jim has been a runner since 1968, when, in his first race, he won the Tulane intramural cross country title. Jim’s most recent half was run over hilly course at an 8:30 pace, good enough to win his age group.* Over the years, Jim has become quite adept at running long distances at a slow, even pace. He's perfectly suited for pacing you runners! Jim is a retired math teacher who also coached track and cross country for much of his thirty-six year tenure at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. He has also served tirelessly on the NOTC board. *He was the only one in his age group.
This race is put on by Jones Physical Therapy in Madisonville, Louisiana, with the 2014 edition being its sixth running. This year the benefiting organization was The Methodist Children's Home.

Pre-Race
Janel, a running friend who lives on the north shore, convinced me that I should make the early morning drive across the Causeway two days in a row to run this race prior to a scheduled half the next. Her case was made easy thanks to the Keeping Up With Jones 5K partnering with the Gulf Coast Half Marathon Series to do a Back-2-Back Challenge. Run the 5K on Saturday morning, then run the north shore half marathon on Sunday, and receive a special Back-2-Back medal. Throw in a promise of plenty door prizes, I'm sold.

The informal race start and finish was conveniently situated just outside the front door of the Mandeville Varsity Sports, with plenty of street parking throughout the neighborhood. The packet pickup was quick and easy, leaving plenty of time to watch the 1-mile kid's run before the 5K started. Janel and I lined up together for the informal start, and took off with about 200 other participants.

The flat and scenic course took runners up and down the Mandeville lakefront, through the adjacent neighborhood, and finished right back where we started. It was a quick race on a cool morning, and a pleasant warm-up for the half marathon the next day.

Post-Race
The party that followed the 5K was something much larger races could learn from. The restaurant next door to Varsity Sports, the Broken Egg Cafe, provided eggs, bacon, biscuits, and yogurt parfaits. In addition, the local Starbucks provided coffee and pastry, Smoothie King poured small strawberry smoothies, and ice chests overflowed with bottled water and canned beer. It was an impressive spread for a gathering of local runners.

The post-race ceremony had age-group awards 2-deep in 5 year increments for both the 5K and 1-mile events. Much to my surprise, I was called up for coming in first in my age group. My pace was nothing to get excited about, but I'll take the cool coffee mug and ego boost any day! It was also cute to see fellow blogger / friend Jenn's 3 year old son win his 1-Mile age division and get to go on-stage to accept his prize.
Sometimes I get wrapped up in bigger events with flashy branding and larger participation fields. While those events are great, these small events can pack a lot of punch. They are affordable, benefit great charities, attract a very local audience, and can be even more fun. This is one of those events, and I'd recommend it in future years.Fred | NOLArunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13275193370710119959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730699651934242791.post-36043594082742808482014-11-03T06:00:00.000-08:002014-11-03T07:17:27.609-08:00Tipitina’s Foundation Rhythm & Blues 5K: The 2014 RecapA recap for the third annual Tipitina’s Foundation Rhythm & Blues 5K is long overdue, as is a recap for several events since. I’m going to do my best this week to catch up with a recap per-day through Friday, as there are many events on the docket that will need to be covered soon after they happen. November and December are the busiest months for racing in the Crescent City, but homage must be paid to the month of October and what has kept us in racing shape though this point.
Pre-Race

The Saturday afternoon on September 27th was warm and humid, and rainy conditions threatened throughout the day leading up to the Rhythm & Blues 5K. As numerous members of the New Orleans Track Club board arrived to set-up, we were excited to have a record number of participants scheduled to show up. In addition to the over 500 registrants, another 100+ Youth Run NOLA students and running buddies were scheduled to cross the finish line. Fortunately, precipitation mostly held off until right before the start time, and even then limited itself to a slight drizzle that helped abate the summer heat.

I then joined the pack to run the out-and-back path along Tchoupitoulas Street. It was great to see so many runners in costume enjoying the evening run, as well as so many YR NOLA kids sporting their color-coded bandanas alongside their mentors. I stopped at several spots along the route to take additional photos of the runners, as well as the multiple bands that had come out to entertain athletes along the 3.1 mile path. The bands that played were from local schools who receive funds from the Tipitina’s Foundation, further music education in our public school system.

Post Race

After runners crossed the finish line and retrieved their finisher’s medal (for the first 500 finishers), they flowed directly in to the post-race party at Napoleon Ave. and Tchoupitoulas Street. Again this year, numerous restaurants supported the race by setting up tables, serving their signature dishes. Zea Rotisserie & Grill, Herbsaint, Raising Canes, Fest Cola, Cook Me Somethin' Mister, Superior Seafood, and countless others lined the neutral ground to feed the hungry, sweaty masses. There was also what seemed to be endless beer on tap, as it continued to flow during the post-race festivities. Really awesome awards were presented to top finishers, while Raising Canes and Varsity Sports provided gift certificates and prizes for costumed contestants.

I really enjoy running the 5K distance during the hot summer months, and the Tipitina’s Foundation Rhythm & Blues 5K delivers by providing a great race followed by a fun party. As a product of a public school music education program, I also think the cause is a worthwhile beneficiary. While the event has been subject to damp weather a couple times over its history, those afternoon showers are something New Orleanians have become accustomed to. Based on this year’s field, it’s also not something that scares us away.

I know October hasn't come to a close just yet, and there's still plenty of candy to be gathered in an attempt to derail those fall training diets; however, we have to look forward to a full slate of exciting running events that start as soon as this weekend!
This Saturday, November 1st at 7:00 a.m. is the Jazz Half Marathon in New Orleans, benefiting the cancer program at Children's Hospital. Online registration is now closed, and for those of you who have already registered for the half or 5K, there' plenty info here to get you prepared for the race. Anyone who hasn't registered, there's still time to participate and support a worthy organization.

Pre-registered participants are guaranteed great weather on Saturday morning, in addition half marathoners receive a technical fabric tee shirt. All 5K participantsreceive a commemorative cotton t-shirt. Participants will have two opportunities to pick these shirts and their race numbers; however, organizers strongly encourage participants to pick everything up at the expo. The expo gives runners a great opportunity to peruse other upcoming races, get discounts, and score samples and info from partners and vendors. Plus, anyone with commitment issues can still get in on the fun, as registration in person will be available here until 6pm on Friday. The expo info is as follows:

Please do not wait until race day if you can avoid it. If you need someone to pick up your packet for you, make sure they have a copy of your ID to show expo staff (a picture on their phone will suffice).

Should race-day packet pickup be required, it will occur from 5:30 a.m. 'til 7am near the start line under the white tent in Lafayette Square (500 Block of Camp Street, New Orleans, LA 70130).

To make this year's race stress-free, race organizers have partnered with Parking Panda, the nationwide leader in online parking reservations. Reserve your 100% guaranteed spot near the start-line or throughout New Orleans.
Please be sure to note the arrival and departure time. Jazz Half discounted options ($4.00 - $9.00) require that you exit before 2 PM. Online parking spots are already available to reserve HERE. If you haven't reserved your parking yet, you may want to consider doing that now. Some of the lots have already sold out.

On Jazz Half Marathon & 5K race day, Saturday, November 1, 2014, the Half Marathon and the 5K will start at 7:00 a.m. (simultaneously). Runners will start in waves:

7:00 a.m.: Competitive Runners ( pace per mile at 8:00 minutes or under)
7:02 a.m.: Fitness Runners ( pace per mile at 12:00 per mile or under)
7:05 a.m.: Casual Runners, ALL Walkers (pace slower than 12 minutes per mile)

Both the Half Marathon course and the 5K course are walker and spectator friendly. The scenic out-and-back course along beautiful St. Charles Avenue allows spectators to cheer for their runners in multiple spots, and still make it back to the finish line in time to reunite for a post-race celebration. See the course map taken from my Garmin data during the 2013 race above. Post-race activities in Lafayette Square, including refreshments and live music by local musicians, will start at 8:30 a.m. and continue until noon.
We all run for different reasons. I train for and participate in racing events to be social, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and assuage my guilt on the rare occasion of consuming more ice cream than any man should be able. Others simply run for the medals (aka bling).

My opinion is that a medal is a nice reward and memento for a great race. I also have come to realize that a great medal is a sign of a well executed event and a race director that pays attention to every detail. With the fall distance racing season upon us, it's time to look at what we're running toward during coming events. Share in the comments below which is your favorite!
The Back2Back Challenge medal was for completing one of those longer distances after finishing the Keeping Up With Jones 5K the day before. In addition, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the half marathon, 5-year finishers received the extra big bling at a post-race awards ceremony.

This first year event benefitted the Prostate Cancer Research Fund at Tulane, and with the color blue being the hue representing awareness for the disease, it was appropriate that numerous blue wigs, outfits, and costumes washed over the quad just off St. Charles Avenue.

Pre-Race
There was no shortage of entertainment as runners arrived in the hour leading up to race time, as the Tulane Sound Wave band played current pop hits continuously. The only break in their set came as the 610 Stompers performed their moves and delighted attendees. Also on-hand were a large number of vendors and sponsors who manned tents, providing giveaways and literature to further the message of prostate detection, treatment, and awareness.

The Main Event
The route for the 2 mile race was quick, but highlighted many of the beautiful landscapes of the university’s campus. The initial stretch was along a tight corridor bordering the west side of the campus; however, once crossing Freret Street, the course gave way to a wide path that passed in front of columned facades of original school buildings, more modern student unions, and eventually approached the newest additions to the historic Tulane campus. After circling past the Riley Center athletic facility, runners were given a glimpse of the freshly christened Yulman Football Stadium and the baseball field. The brief out-and-back that bordered these complexes was nearly the final stretch in a very quick race, but the most impressive highlight on the course was the finish under the NOTC arch. It was situated dead center in the middle of Tulane’s lush quad. As the Tulane band played on, the shady oak trees made for a picture perfect setting to cap off the event.

Post Race
With the setting sun creeping on the event, a live band performed well in to the evening as several tents served food and beer to participants. Cool wrought metal trophies were presented to top finishers, and plaques were awarded to age-group leaders.

Room for Improvement
The NOLA Blue Doo Run has a ton of potential for growth, as the affliction of Prostate Cancer touched many local families. With one of the leading researchers on the topic being based out of Tulane, it makes perfect sense for the community to get behind the cause. However, with that growth comes the need to tweak the course to accommodate a larger participant field. My main concern would be the starting area that tended to be a bit constricting; however, there are numerous places where that could be moved when the need arises. As long as the finish remains in the same location, I’ll be happy!

Final Thoughts
The vein of blue that ran through every element of the first ever NOLA Blue Doo Run tied it all together and made for an exceptional race. I liked the short distance and evening start time, as it made the summer heat bearable. With final numbers still being tallied, over $130,000 was raised to combat a disease that affects countless men and their families.
On Monday, they announced plans to have a 10K event on the same day as their other two signature races, January 25th, 2015.

The course for the 10K (seen above) highlights many of the same landmarks that half and full marathoners experience, including Lee Circle, St. Louis Cathedral, the French Quarter, the historic St. Louis Cemetery, and more. The finish under the moss covered oaks of New Orleans City Park is one of the most picturesque venues for an after-party you'll find.

Right now, Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans is celebrating all of their exciting announcements by offering $5 off the 10K distance. Register HERE before this Friday, October 10th at 11:59 p.m. and use the code RUN10SAVE5 to get the discount.
Have you been training for 13.1 miles, or have you decided to go all-out and tackle the full 26.2? The first local long-distance race of the season is the Gulf Coast Half Marathon series in Mandeville, LA. They are celebrating their 5th anniversary on October 19, 2014, and rewarding participants for the continued success of the event!

For the first time, the Gulf Coast Half Marathon will team up with Keeping up with Jones 5K to introduce the Back2Back Challenge. Complete their 5K on Saturday, October 18th and the 10 miler or half on Sunday, October 19th, and earn a special Back2Back Challenge medal. Yesterday, race organizers unveiled what the challenge medal and the half marathon medal will look like.

In addition to the two finisher medals mentioned above, it was revealed several months ago on the GCHM Facebook page that participants completing their 5th consecutive Mandeville Half would receive a special medal featuring the event mascot, Joe Relaxo. Also, all finishers in this year's race will receive a commemorative pint glass with a matching logo. All of the medals and pint glass can be seen in this exclusive photo.

Finally, to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the series, race organizers have commissioned a work by talented northshore artist, Camille Quintana. The commemorative print seen above will be awarded to overall and age group winners, as well as be available for purchase at the expo on Friday, Saturday, and after the race on Sunday. Remember that 10 miler participants also qualify for awards, so step up your game if you are angling to win one. The custom design is the background on your race number seen here.
There's no question that we've hit fall. My consumption of Pumpkin Spiced Latte's is on the rise, while my electricity bill has taken a nose dive. I'm thrilled about this trend; however, the savings from Entergy are already spent on several upcoming races. When it comes to quality events in the Crescent City on which to spend your registration dollar, October is where things really start to heat-up.

There's a few events in this lineup that I personally plan on attending, including the Oktoberfest 5K, Gulf Coast Half Marathon, and possibly the Cane Field Classic. Two out of the three I've never experienced, and the third has countless surprise additions each year. Where will your fall racing schedule take you?
Thanks to an announcement today from the Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon and 1/2 Marathon, area runners will have something more to consider when deciding between running the half and full distance on January 25th.
NEW for 2015: All FULL marathon finishers will receive an exclusive Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans Marathon Finisher’s jacket ... at NO additional cost! This is in addition to the participant shirt, finisher's medal, and other amenities provided to runners on race day.

4) Submit your Registration.

6) Pick up your jacket at the Rock ‘n’ Roll tent after their race with your bib and finisher’s medal!
All full marathon finishers will receive this jacket regardless of when they registered, even if they registered before today.
The official design of the full marathon finisher's jacket will be unveiled at a later date; as the image above is a sample. However, if it's like the one shown in this graphic, I was given one by a friend to celebrate my 2013 finish. It is the MOST comfortable pullover I own, and wear it often.
You probably haven’t noticed that one thing missing from my race recaps are pictures of me running. The reason for that is simple; I look like a beast when mid-stride. I don’t mean “beast mode,” I mean “villagers with torches” beastly. However, this October, you can put your pitchforks away.

Yesterday, the Gulf Coast Half Marathon and 10 Miler announced that it has partnered up with Northshore Plastic Surgery to provide every runner of the October 19th race with free high-quality digital photography. That means no-more having to take selfies mid-run, no need to ask random strangers to take your photo, and more importantly no more sweating all over the lens and pictures coming out blurry. Northshore Plastic Surgery is doing everything it possibly can to make us look our best, even when running a half marathon!

And yes, you did read that right. All of these pictures are going to be provided 100% FREE to runners in the days after the race. There won’t be any high prices for individual photos, and your Facebook profile pic won’t have PROOF watermarked across the middle of it. Each runner can expect 6-8 shots to be available to them for digital download soon after the event. Just be sure to wear your number in a very visible location so you can easily be identified by photographers when sorting the images.

If this free photo opportunity wasn’t enough to peak your interest in running the Gulf Coast Half Marathon, maybe a $20 discount on race registration would make it even more enticing. Use the code “NOLArunner” when you register HERE BEFORE September 28th, and get that great discount for the race.

The Gulf Coast Half Marathon and 10 Miler powered by Varsity Sports has multiple exciting announcements over the next several weeks, and they've asked me to help share news as it’s made available. While you’re waiting to hear about what’s new, check out my recap from the 2013 race HERE!

As always, while race organizers may provide info and / or a comp race entry for me to cover local events, the views and honest opinions I express here on NOLArunner.com and on my various social media accounts are my own.

Voting closed last Thursday in the contest to determine what this year's bling will look like for Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon & 1/2 Marathon finishers. Did you let your voice be heard in time? Did the design you liked the most get picked to hang around thousands of finishers' necks come January 25, 2015? The wait is over, and now's when you get to find out!

Voting was close in the contest, but the winning design that edged out the others was done by Kyler Wilson. His circular layout features a bead border surrounding the race name, the date, and distance along with a silhouette of Louisiana, an iconic New Orleans street lamp, and wrought iron embellishments. Each element on the medal captures New Orleans well, and I personally am thrilled with the chosen design! I can't wait to earn mine after running 26.2 in just a few months.
Also announced was a new charity partner for the race, as it's being called the The Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon & 1/2 Marathon benefiting Feed The Children. Feed the Children works to create a world where no child goes to bed hungry. They distributed more than $344 million worth of food, essentials, education supplies, and medicine to more than 10 million individuals last year alone. Through Team Feed the Children, runners of the Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon and 1/2 Marathon can dedicate their event training and race participation to make a lasting change in the lives of children in the New Orleans community. Sprinting through the stores the day after Thanksgiving won't be the only challenge facing NOLA runners this holiday season. Yesterday, the New Orleans Track Club and the Smoothie King Big Easy Running Festival announced a partnership between their two signature winter half marathons and introduced the Holiday Half Challenge.

To complete the Holiday Half Marathon Challenge, participants must run the Big Easy Half Marathon the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 23rd, then run the Ole Man River Half Marathon the Saturday before Christmas, December 20th. As a reward for completing both 13.1 races, runners will receive an additional Holiday Half Marathon Challenge medallion worthy of keeping on the appropriately themed holiday ribbon, or hang from their holiday tree!

New Orleans Track Club race director Jennifer Neil said, “Combining the efforts of two great races, The Big Easy Half and the Ole Man River Half, will give runners an opportunity to see multiple areas of the city with amazing scenery. This challenge will bring participants from the Westbank to the Lakefront, and reward them at the finish for their efforts.”

The Holiday Half Marathon Challenge is a landmark venture between these two organizations, with the New Orleans Track Club being one of the oldest running clubs in the country, and the Smoothie King Big Easy Running Festival being the newest event on the NOLA running scene. “The opportunity to partner with one of the oldest and largest running clubs in the country was something that any running event should embrace," stated Bill Burke, race director for the Big Easy Running Festival .

The Big Easy Half Marathon promises to give runners a great experience, crossing the Mississippi River and covering a lot of territory through downtown and Mid City. The race finishes just outside the home of the New Orleans Pelicans, the Smoothie King Center! Now in it’s 33rd year, the Ole Man River Half Marathon has become one of the oldest Half Marathon events in the country. Starting and finishing in New Orleans City Park, this flat and fast course will play host to the 2014 Louisiana RRCA State Half Marathon Championships. I've run the Ole Man River Half Marathon the past six years, and you can check out my 2013 recap HERE.
